Chapter 9

A half-hour later I was happily soaking in a tub. Once we’d reached the circus I’d removed my head-scarf and arm wrappings. Skye changed back to being a gold dragon and we waited until one of the shows started—and everyone was preoccupied with entertaining the crowd—before sneaking back inside. After we reached Skye’s tent, I changed back into my normal clothing and made my way to the bathhouse to soak away the dust and blood.

How is your leg?

Startled, I jerked up, sloshing water over the edge of the tub.

“Skye?” I didn’t know she could speak to me from so far away.

I think our bond is strengthening. I could not feel you for more than a couple feet before, now I know exactly where you are when you move around the circus.

“How wonderful for you,” I said as I laid back in the tub. “And my leg is feeling much better, thank you.” On my way to the bathhouse I’d grabbed a few herbs from one of the supply tents and cleaned myself up.

The wound Viscount Lynis had given me wasn’t too deep, but it was still painful. “I figure it will take a couple of weeks to heal.” I’d always been a fast healer, and I rarely got sick.

“Did you say something? Are you alright in there, dear?” Maggie asked from the other side of the door.

“Yes! I’m fine!” I quickly said. “I’ll shout if I need anything!”

I’d forgotten Maggie had the ears of a bat.

I didn’t realize her hearing was so good, Skye paused, thinking. Why don’t you speak mind to mind with me? You should be able to, shouldn’t you? Why don’t you try it?

Was that even possible? I’d never attempted it in the week we’d been together.

I closed my eyes and focused on Skye, I could feel every beat of her heart, every breath she took, and the itch behind one of her horns. Can you hear me? I hesitantly asked as she scratched the itch that was plaguing her.

Happiness radiated out from her. I can hear you! Excellent, this will greatly help us in the next two races.

I thought we were doing pretty well without the fancy tricks.

We did do rather well today.

I smiled. We got third place, didn’t we? I think that speaks for itself.

What do you think the next race will be like? Cinder said it was a six day race and it started in Vallica and went all the way up to Dazgaurun.

I’m more concerned with how Cinder is going to get us there. We don’t even know where this race begins, to say nothing of Roger; he’d never give me a week or two off. I hope Cinder comes up with a good plan to get us to the race and back.

Getting out of the tub, I dried off.

All done?

I pulled on my clothes. I’ll be right over.

Why don’t you eat some food first, you didn’t have lunch either. And speaking of lunch, mine has just arrived.

Leaving the bathhouse, I strolled over to the mess tent and had a quick meal.
